Driving this car for 11 days w/ the top down inspired me to get a convertible of my own, albeit one will a rigid platform and favorable handling dynamics rather than this broken diving board w/ hideous wheels on it.
My parents bought this between my junior and senior year in high school in June of 2001. It had 30K miles. Fast forward to now. It has 165K miles and is my official "rainy day" car. I try to keep her pretty, though. She's treated me well.
Technically my father's, we purchased this prize in 1995 w/ 10K miles on it for $15,995. Mom drove it until 2000, when she replaced it with a 1999 Corolla. It became dad's shortly after. We then purchased a 2001 GMC Sierra 2500HD in 2004. Dad continues to drive The Box to work to keep miles off the "new" truck. 163K miles and counting...
My family purchased this gem in 1989 as a legitimate vehicle. Who knew that, come 17 years later, we'd still have it. Currently sitting, which is what it has become accustomed to in the last 6 years, the Dodge is used for special occasions: field truck on the farm, errand truck when nasty cargo is involved, showing the neighbors that they don't have the shittiest taste in the county after all. My emotions on this truck have run the gauntlet of emotions: pride, indifference, extreme embarrasment, and finally a quiet respect. It's hideous. It's old. It still runs.
This "replaced" the 93 Safari in 2000. Technically replace is the wrong word because we still have both, but whatever. This former loaner car had 7000 miles when we picked it up. Now has 107,000. Other than routine maintenance, this car has never cost my mom a cent in repair costs. Don't mistake it's quiet blandness for a lack of personalitly. This car has one mission in life: to get you there. And it's devoted to its mission...
This prize became mine as part of an effort to gets some hands on experience working on cars. It was purchased by the previous owner for a case of Mountain Dew. He got it running, at least, and then I bought it for the grand total of 160 bucks.
During the time I had it, I put a new clutch in it which, God love FWD, involved pulling the engine. I could never get the engine to run quite right, however, and I soon made the car into a ramp jumping, ditch hitting, tree pushing, field car. Lots of fun with this little bastard, but I didn't get to see it that much, college being in Michigan, car being in Kentucky. It was hauled off to the junkyard shortly after.
Rented this in midtown Manhattan and drove it straight through to Owensboro, KY after a long marketing trip for work. It performed admirably for a rental car, the shortcomings being the unrefined OHV engine noise, the pantyhose-materials seats, and the old woman color.
It did, however, get 29 mpg, which still falls short of my Intrigue which has more power, infinitely more miles, and more age. Go GM...
