About this Guide

A guide to great motorcycle movies.

Step 1: The Wild One

A gang of 40 motorcyclists, the Black Rebels, gatecrash a legitimate motorcycle race. They are eventually thrown out, but one of the gang steals the second prize trophy and gives it to their leader, Johnny. The gang then ride into Wrightsville, where they cruise up and down the main street, and pile into Bleekers - the local bar. The owner of the bar, the Sheriff, is happy to let the bikers spend their money, so does nothing to break up any disturbances. Johnny falls for the Sheriffs daughter, and tries to impress her with the trophy. When a rival gang ride into town, trouble is just around the corner.

Step 2: Easy Rider

Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper star as two motorcycle riders (bikers) on their way to Mardis Gras, and encounter hitchhikers, a drunken lawyer (Jack Nicholson), a jail cell, a whorehouse and the death of a friend. A definite one for motorcycle lovers, and if you want to see Dennis Hopper directing and starring in a great motorcycle movie.

Step 3: Girl on a Motorcycle

Newly-married Rebecca leaves her husband on her prized motorbike - symbol of freedom and escape - to visit her lover in Heidelberg. En route she indulges in psychedelic reveries as she relives her changing relationship with the two men.

Step 4: Electra Glide in Blue

A short Arizona motorcycle cop gets his wish and is promoted to Homicide following the mysterious murder of a hermit. He is forced to confront his illusions about himself and those around him in order to solve the case, eventually returning to solitude in the desert.

Step 5: On Any Sunday

A documentary following the lives of motorcycle racers and racing enthusiasts, including actor Steve McQueen. First asking the question Why do they do it? this film looks at the people who devote (and sometimes risk) their lives to racing on tracks and off-road courses around the world.
